Colin Raby is the founder and CEO of FarmMind, a management platform for agriculture that combines the first unified system of record with an agricultural AI that answers with citations. It turns weather, soil, regulation and crop science into decisions a farmer can act on, and it started in an LSU classroom in 2023.

The Longest Line in Philadelphia

On narrative, nation, and what motivates our lives and shapes what we are willing to die for

This Memorial Day, I found myself thinking about something I saw in Philadelphia last week.

The longest line in the historic district was not at Independence Hall, where men signed their names beneath the words that would inaugurate a new kind of nation. It was not at the Liberty Bell, or at Carpenters’ Hall, or at any of the rooms where the American experiment was first argued and penned into existence. It was at the base of a bronze statue of a fictional boxer from a 1976 film, posed in mid-celebration at the foot of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The tour bus driver said it plainly, and without irony: “Here’s the Rocky Museum that happens to have art in it.”

In brief

  1. 2I trained as a mechanical engineer in the LSU Ogden Honors College, with minors in aerospace engineering and economics.
  2. 3I also learned that institutions change when someone is willing to do the unglamorous work.
  3. 4In the fall of 2023 I helped start LSU's first course on large language models.
  4. 5In 2024 I went to Washington as one of the first AI specialists to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives…
  5. 6So I came back to Louisiana to lead FarmMind full time.
  6. 7I have not left the policy conversation; I have joined it from the other side of the table.
  7. 8I am always glad to talk with founders building in real-world industries…
